How to charge for a trading Discord without the cut

Access to a trading room is priced high — $50 to $200 a month is ordinary — and that is exactly where a platform percentage hurts most, because the cut grows with the price. At $200 a month a percentage platform keeps $11.70 to $11.80 of every single payment. flatpass charges a flat monthly fee, takes 0% of your sales, and settles into your own Stripe account.

Card processing included. Discord and Whop process their own, so those rates follow them. flatpass and LaunchPass sales are charged on your own Stripe account, so that half is your country’s Stripe rate — shown here at the US 2.9% + $0.30, and lower in the EEA. flatpass’s monthly tier is on top: free up to 15 paid members, then $29 on Starter. At a $100 membership, that means free below 16 members and cheaper from there on. At smaller membership prices there’s a stretch in between where a percentage costs less: breakeven is about $1,036/month in sales on Starter and $1,036 on Growth.

The higher you price, the more a percentage costs

A cut is charged on the price. A flat fee is not. On a trading membership that difference is most of the bill.

The short version

Because a percentage is charged on the price, and trading access is priced high. At $200 a month a platform taking 5.9% keeps $11.80 of every member's payment, every month, and one taking Whop's all-in 5.7% keeps $11.70. Discord's own subscriptions keep $30.80. flatpass takes none of the payment at any price — you pay a flat monthly fee instead, and it does not move when you raise your price. A flat fee has to be paid before it earns its keep, so it is not the cheaper option at every size. Past the free plan's 15 members a percentage still costs less until you are doing about $1,036 a month in sales — at $50 a month that is a gap between 16 and about 20 paying members. Above about $65 a month per member there is no gap at all, because 15 members already clear it. At $100 a month with 80 paying members — about $8,000 a month in sales — your whole bill on flatpass is $285 a month, card processing included. The cheapest of the percentage platforms at that size is $480. The gap is $195 a month, and it widens every time you add a member or raise a price, because their bill is a percentage of a number that is growing and ours is not.

Your price is the thing a percentage punishes

A platform cut scales with what you charge. On a $200 membership, 5.9% is $11.80 out of every payment and Whop's all-in 5.7% is $11.70 — each month, from each member. A flat monthly fee is the same number whether you charge $50 or $200, so raising your price raises your income and nothing else.

Yes. You can run as many paid roles per server as you want — a signals tier and a mentorship tier at different prices, or monthly against quarterly, six-monthly and yearly on the same role, with the member choosing at checkout. Free tiers are supported too, and members on a free tier never count toward the 15-member cap.

What the platform keeps from one member's payment each month. Whop and Discord process their own cards, so their figures include that; with flatpass and Upgrade.chat the card is processed on your own Stripe account at your own rate, 2.9% + $0.30 at the US rate modelled here, which is the same on both sides and left out of both columns. flatpass's own monthly fee is separate and does not change with your price — the table below has it in full.

Upgrade.chat's figure is the cheapest of its plans available at that size.

Common questions

Why does a percentage cost more on a trading server?

Because a percentage is charged on the price, and trading access is priced high. At $200 a month a platform taking 5.9% keeps $11.80 of every member's payment, every month, and one taking Whop's all-in 5.7% keeps $11.70. Discord's own subscriptions keep $30.80. flatpass takes none of the payment at any price — you pay a flat monthly fee instead, and it does not move when you raise your price.

What would I actually pay?

At $100 a month with 80 paying members — about $8,000 a month in sales — your whole bill on flatpass is $285 a month, card processing included. The cheapest of the percentage platforms at that size is $480. The gap is $195 a month, and it widens every time you add a member or raise a price, because their bill is a percentage of a number that is growing and ours is not. The size-by-size table is above, and every platform's published rates, each with its own date, are on the fee dataset.

What if I only have a handful of paying members?

Then flatpass is free. Up to 15 paying members costs nothing, with every feature and no card, and we still take 0% of what those members pay. A percentage platform charges from the first sale: at $100 a month, 15 members is $88.50 a month gone on one platform and $90.00 on another, before you have proven the room works.

Is flatpass always the cheaper option?

A flat fee has to be paid before it earns its keep, so it is not the cheaper option at every size. Past the free plan's 15 members a percentage still costs less until you are doing about $1,036 a month in sales — at $50 a month that is a gap between 16 and about 20 paying members. Above about $65 a month per member there is no gap at all, because 15 members already clear it.

Who holds the money?

Your own Stripe account, through Stripe Connect Standard. You complete the onboarding on Stripe's own screens, you are the merchant of record, member payments settle directly to you rather than into a platform balance you withdraw from, and you keep your customer list and payment history if you leave. flatpass never sees a card and never holds your money.

Can I run more than one paid tier?

Yes. You can run as many paid roles per server as you want — a signals tier and a mentorship tier at different prices, or monthly against quarterly, six-monthly and yearly on the same role, with the member choosing at checkout. Free tiers are supported too, and members on a free tier never count toward the 15-member cap.

What happens when someone cancels or a card fails?

The role is granted within seconds of a successful payment and removed when the subscription ends, so nobody keeps access they stopped paying for and no moderator has to check a list. A failed renewal is treated differently from a cancellation: the role stays while Stripe retries the card and the member gets an email to update it, so an expired card does not quietly cost you a member.
