Tick the switchable box on each paid tier that belongs to one ladder, and members switch between them instead of paying for two. Moving up charges the prorated difference at once; moving down starts when their paid period ends.
Every paid tier has a box, off until you tick it: Members can switch between this and your other switchable offers. Tick it when you create the tier or when you edit it, and the tier shows a Switchable chip on your dashboard.
The tiers you tick form your server’s upgrade path. A member holds one of them at a time and moves between them with a switch: the same subscription at a new price, never a second one beside it.
A tier you leave unticked is an add-on. Members buy it as a separate subscription next to anything else they have, and cancel it on its own. Your invite page warns a member who already pays for a plan: This starts a separate subscription.
Tick the tiers that are rungs of one ladder, where a member who wants more moves from the lower tier to the higher one, such as Basic, Pro and VIP. Without the box, moving up means buying the higher tier, cancelling the lower one, and paying for both until the lower one’s period runs out.
Leave unticked anything members buy on top: a coaching channel, a course, a separate community. A server has one upgrade path, so every tier you tick is on the same one.
A member can move to any other billing period a tier sells, longer or shorter, on every paid tier, ticked or not. It is timed and charged the same way as a switch between tiers. A change of period keeps the tier, so the role stays as it is.
A member who can switch does it on your invite page, where picking another plan or period turns the button into a Switch button; in your server, from Change plan on the card /membership shows or from a button on your pinned plans panel; or on Stripe’s billing page, which offers the same switches.
Each one shows what the switch costs and when it happens before anything changes, and nothing is charged until the member confirms.
Moving up happens now. For a tier that costs the same or more per payment, on the same or a longer period, the member pays the prorated difference at once, and the new tier and its role start when that payment goes through. A longer period starts a fresh period that day. If the card is declined, nothing changes: they keep their tier, and can pay from Stripe’s page or cancel the switch.
Moving down waits for the period end. For a tier that costs less per payment, or a shorter period, the member keeps what they paid for until their period ends, and the new tier starts then. They can undo it until that date.
In a free trial, a switch happens now and costs nothing. The trial keeps its end date, and a switch never starts a second trial.
What holds a switch back. A member who is past due pays first, a paused one resumes first, and one whose plan is set to end keeps it first. A switch never changes the currency a member pays in. A promo code you limited to one tier stops applying when the member leaves that tier, and they see that before confirming; a code for every tier carries over.
When a member moves to a tier with a different role, flatpass gives the new role first and takes the old one off once the new one is on, so the member always holds one of the two.
The new tier’s role has to sit below flatpass’s own role, as for any tier. If the bot can’t give it, the member keeps the old role and you’re told what to move: why the bot isn’t assigning the role.
The Activity view of your Members card lists each switch as an upgrade, a downgrade or a billing period change, with the plan before and after. Under Subscribers, a switch that hasn’t happened yet shows under the member’s plan, with its date or as waiting for payment.
A switch is not a new member. It doesn’t add to your paid-member count, and members can switch even while new checkouts are paused at your cap. Your team channel gets a line saying who switched to which tier, never a new-subscriber line, and the welcome channel stays quiet. A change of billing period posts nothing.
A switch’s charge counts in Collected this month like any payment, and on a referred member’s subscription it earns commission at the new tier’s rate.
A full refund of a switch’s prorated charge gives the member the difference back and leaves them on the tier they switched to. It doesn’t end the membership, as a full refund of an ordinary payment does. After a switch, that charge is the last payment the ⋯ menu offers to refund with Cancel immediately, and the dialog shows its amount. How refunds work.
If you change a member’s subscription to another tier’s price in your own Stripe dashboard, flatpass follows it: the member moves to that tier and the role is swapped, whether or not either tier is ticked. A price that isn’t one of your tiers’ prices moves nothing.
An archived tier is off the path: members you kept on it stay on their plan but can’t switch until you restore it. Members who already held two tiers before you ticked them keep both, and neither is switched into the other.
Ask in the flatpass Discord, or email support@flatpass.io. Both are read by the people who build it.
